San Mauro Castelverde is located in the Palermo province about 1,015m a.s.l. atop Mount San Mauro. It has a population of nearly 3.000. The Byzantine roots of the town seem confirmed by the ruins of an ancient castle.

The town is dotted with several interesting secular and religious buildings. The 1700ís Chiesa Madre houses, among other pieces, a 1500ís marble altarpiece and fragments of a 1400ís polyptych, depicting the Madonna and Child with Saints. The Medieval Chiesa di Santa Maria dei Franchi is internally divided into three naves containing a fine 1400ís statue of the Madonna del Soccorso and a 1500ís baptismal font by Antonello Gagini. A final mention must go to the Museo Antropologico, housed in the former Town Hall.
