SOLARINO
Solarino is a mainly agricultural centre
standing at 165m asl in the province of Siracusa. It counts just over 7,000
inhabitants. First a barony, the town was probably founded by Giuseppe Antonio
Requesenz, Prince of Pantelleria, in 1759.
It is laid out on a grid of orthogonal streets
that still reveal some signs of the earliest settlement.
Its principal buildings are the Palazzo
Requesenz – built some years before the town foundation, and the 1700’s Mother
Church dedicated to St. Paul. In the city surrounding are sites of mainly
naturalistic interest, like the Anapo River’s, and a 1500’s farmhouse in the
Contrada Cozzo Collura district, claiming archaeological importance since
relics from the 2nd to the 4th century AD were there
discovered.
